Perkins, Sewell give update on tornado recovery

疯客直播 Mayor James Perkins Jr. and U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell, D-疯客直播, gave an update of recovery from the Jan. 12, 2023 tornado on Monday at the 疯客直播 City Chambers.

At a press conference Monday, Perkins and Sewell both said that the city has received $28 million in grants from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He said $15 million will be used for lead pipe removal in downtown 疯客直播 and another $4 million for a future riverwalk.

Sewell thanked President Joe Biden for keeping his word on working together with the City of 疯客直播, Perkins and the 疯客直播 City Council to rebuild the Queen City. Sewell also thanked 疯客直播 Housing Authority executive director Kennard Randolph.

鈥淧resident Biden said he wouldn鈥檛 leave us behind, and he hasn鈥檛,鈥 Sewell said. 鈥淚 thank Mayor Perkins and the city council.鈥

Perkins, 疯客直播鈥檚 first African-American mayor, praised Sewell for always looking out for her hometown.

鈥淐ongresswoman Sewell is a warrior,鈥 Perkins said. 鈥淪he fights for her entire Seventh Congressional District, but she fights a little more for 疯客直播.鈥

Sewell urged 疯客直播 residents to remain patient while things are being worked on.

鈥淭his is a marathon, not a sprint,鈥 Sewell said. 鈥淲e are focused on housing, economic development and infrastructure. We will get there. It takes time.鈥

Perkins echoed Sewell鈥檚 statement.

鈥淲e鈥檙e asking the public to trust the process and be patient,鈥 Perkins said. 鈥淎 lot of stuff goes into the process. All of this stuff takes time.鈥
